News Release

January 10, 2018

Hoffman Center Offers Botanical Drawing

Botanical

The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita will offer five Botanical Drawing classes throughout 2018, starting Saturday February 10. The first workshop will be Botanical Sketchbook, followed by spring, summer, fall and winter sessions.

Led by Dorota Haber-Lehigh, the series of workshops will focus on drawing from nature while being inspired by changing seasons.  The workshops can be taken independently or as a series. Each workshop will have a different seasonal focus while emphasizing sketching from observation. Students will experiment with new techniques, study botanical accuracy and the learn the importance of self-expression. The series is designed for students 18 and up, and all skill levels are welcome.

The first workshop will focus on keeping a botanical sketchbook. In this workshop, students will engage in creative, meditative, and structured exercises to dive into this practice. In this foundation class, students will learn sketching, measuring, tonal/shading, application, color blending and layering, and composition ideas. Using pen, graphite and color pencils for sketching and combining and adding text will give students the tools to embrace their personal style and use a sketchbook to record their botanical journey. By the end of the first class, students will complete several entries in their sketchbooks and will walk away with ideas on how to continue throughout the year.

Tuition is $45 per session, or $150.00 for all five sessions. ($30/per session).

Classes will be held February 10, from 1:00 to 4:00pm; and April 28, August 25, October 20, and December 1, from Noon to 4:00pm.

Haber-Lehigh’s art and teaching explore the ephemeral beauty of nature, magic of native plants and human connection with plants. She holds degrees in Art, Indigenous Studies, Spanish and Education. She authored two ethnobotanical coloring books. Her workshops are engaging, inclusive and fun. They are designed for all levels and abilities. She is currently working on a Diploma in Botanical Illustration through the Society of Botanical Artists in London. She has taught students whose age ranged from 10 to 90+, and of all artistic abilities in public schools, community colleges and art centers.

CANNON BEACH — The Palette Puddlers’ annual Memorial Day weekend art show and sale will be held at the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce, 207 N. Spruce St., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 25; Saturday, May 26; and Sunday, May 27.

We will also be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, May 28. Admission and refreshments are free.

In addition, our artists will provide demonstrations of their art styles throughout the weekend. It’s possible you will find something “just created” to purchase.

The Palette Puddlers are a group of professional women artists, many of whom have painted together for years. Every Monday, rain or shine, they paint in a Cannon Beach locale while providing mutual support, critiquing artistic efforts, sharing the joy of creativity and just having a great time.

Over Memorial Day Weekend, they create an art gallery at the Visitor’s Center to share and sell their original work.

Members Susan Bish, Judith Fredrikson, Mary Ann Gantenbein, Suzanne King, Jo Pomeroy-Crockett, Linda Gebhart, Debbie Loyd, Barbara Thacker and Jane McGeehan will show and sell original works of art, including watercolor, acrylics, mixed media and pastels.

Cards and print reproductions of their work are also available, as well as the bargain bin and bargain rack where framed and unframed paintings are available for a minimal price. Some of these artists show their work in other venues in the Northwest, and their paintings adorn homes throughout the state and nation.

Most of the Palette Puddlers display their work at trailsendart.org. If you are interested in a specific artist’s work, go to the website, then click on “artists” on the left hand menu. That will take you to the artist list.

But better yet, come to Cannon Beach over Memorial Day weekend, meet the artists, watch them work and check out these reasonably priced paintings.

HOFFMAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS
NEWS RELEASE
CLASS: Painting Watercolor Florals
Ikebana
May 2, 2018

The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita will host a two-day workshop, “Painting Watercolor Florals: Inspired by the Japanese Art of Ikebana. The workshop is Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17. Led by artist Carolyn Gates of Eugene, this class will use beautiful, live Ikebana arrangements as subject matter.

Ikebana (literally translated) means ‘flowers kept alive.’ Arrangements appear simple, yet natural. But, they are complex and involve a symmetry of carefully planned relationships.

Students will learn more about composition and creating form when painting still life from traditional Japanese Ikebana arrangements. Training the eye to see both the complexity and simplicity of the Ikebana arrangements will enhance the skills of beginning to advanced watercolor painters.

This workshop is designed for adults 18 and older. Some drawing skills are preferred, but not necessary.

Gates currently teaches watercolor at Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene, Oregon, and has also taught several workshops at the Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita, Oregon. She enjoys teaching and is inspired by the work her student’s do. Her focus is teaching basic concepts, while encouraging each student to find their own voice. “After every class and workshop, I want to go back to my studio and paint with the freedom and joy I see in my student’s work.”

She has won numerous commissions to paint in watercolor and colored pencil and has had several shows around Oregon.

‘I investigate beauty, shape and color and in doing so, hope to uncover the interplay between the ordinary and the extraordinary.”

Gates is a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon. For more information and to view her work, go to her website at www.cgates.com.

The two-day workshop on Saturday and Sunday, June 16 & 17, is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day with a break for lunch. Tuition is $100.

Students must also bring materials from the materials list that can be found on the Hoffman Center’s Blog post for this class at http://hoffmanarts.org/events/watercolor-florals/

a provocative series of paintings and installation by Astoria artist, Morrison Pierce.  The 30 piece show looks back at World War II to illustrate the tragedy of war, drawing imagery  from photos of real people and children who lived and died in effects of the biggest and bloodiest conflict in history.

McVarish gallery

Morrison painted this series of scenes in his unique expressionist style, playing ironically with candy colors associated with childhood and innocence, while capturing the sadness and devastation of war. Within the show is a story of two brothers for whom a sad fate is determined when one is sent to war. Works starting on the left entrance area of the gallery represent innocence and childhood under the foreshadow of the imminent war leading into the main exhibit room where the imagery became far more devastating as the conflict rages. He juxtaposes innocence and the presence of evil in a thought provoking way. Its a theme he’s been returning to in various mediums over 20 years. While it’s a reflection on the past it’s also meant to reflect the potential for history to repeat itself in our present political climate.

In Morrison’s words, “‘America is Beautiful’ is a return to the past events in history that can remind us of how far we have come as a society,

or how quickly we could find ourselves right back where we started. It’s a sad reminder of where we have been and how families can be ripped apart just for the color of skin… Love defeats hate and these paintings, although dark in content, seem to show there is light at the end of the tunnel”

   McVarish gallery

It’s certainly not an easy subject, but a noble one to undertake. “How to uncover evil with a mirror for all to see is never an easy task, but one worth the time, if anything is going to change.”

Morrison has been painting and traveling for over twenty years and it shows in his fluidity of ideas and execution. Originally a film major, the cinematic element is still very present in his work and presentation. It can be seen in the way his show is designed to tell a story, even bringing back certain characters in more than on piece. Another unusual characteristic is the linear order of the show.  The story begins on the left side of the gallery and then walks the viewer through the scenes. The final  piece  attempts to show light through darkness, bringing not a happy ending, but maybe an optimistic one. Then adding more drama to the spectacle, the show will also include an installation fraught with morbid symbolism.

His decision to come to Astoria in 2017 was based on a coin flip. Having traveled to most other cities in the US, this was one he had not seen yet. This will be his first show in Astoria, which he now calls home. “I like the tight knit community of working artists, musicians and free thinkers… and the moody rainy winters.” He brings interesting and vibrant addition to the wealth of art here and has more theatric shows planned at McVarish Gallery in the coming years.

“America is Beautiful” opens with a reception from 5:00- 8:30pm Sat. September 8th and runs until November 11th at McVarish Gallery 160 Tenth Street.  mcvarishgallery.com
