Hoffman Center for the Arts – Botanical Drawing

News Release

January 10, 2018

Hoffman Center Offers Botanical Drawing

Botanical

The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita will offer five Botanical Drawing classes throughout 2018, starting Saturday February 10. The first workshop will be Botanical Sketchbook, followed by spring, summer, fall and winter sessions.

Led by Dorota Haber-Lehigh, the series of workshops will focus on drawing from nature while being inspired by changing seasons.  The workshops can be taken independently or as a series. Each workshop will have a different seasonal focus while emphasizing sketching from observation. Students will experiment with new techniques, study botanical accuracy and the learn the importance of self-expression. The series is designed for students 18 and up, and all skill levels are welcome.

The first workshop will focus on keeping a botanical sketchbook. In this workshop, students will engage in creative, meditative, and structured exercises to dive into this practice. In this foundation class, students will learn sketching, measuring, tonal/shading, application, color blending and layering, and composition ideas. Using pen, graphite and color pencils for sketching and combining and adding text will give students the tools to embrace their personal style and use a sketchbook to record their botanical journey. By the end of the first class, students will complete several entries in their sketchbooks and will walk away with ideas on how to continue throughout the year.

Tuition is $45 per session, or $150.00 for all five sessions. ($30/per session).

Classes will be held February 10, from 1:00 to 4:00pm; and April 28, August 25, October 20, and December 1, from Noon to 4:00pm.

Haber-Lehigh’s art and teaching explore the ephemeral beauty of nature, magic of native plants and human connection with plants. She holds degrees in Art, Indigenous Studies, Spanish and Education. She authored two ethnobotanical coloring books. Her workshops are engaging, inclusive and fun. They are designed for all levels and abilities. She is currently working on a Diploma in Botanical Illustration through the Society of Botanical Artists in London. Hoffman Center Offers Sketchbook Journaling
Mar 19 @ 10:00 am – Mar 20 @ 4:00 pm

The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita Sketchbook Journaling, a two-day workshop Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19, led by local artists Melissa Young and Barbara Temple-Ayres.

Journaling is a gift you give yourself. Time spent reflecting where you are, right here, right now. This workshop will offer tools to help you incorporate creative expression into your life.

Art journals are a great place to experiment and play with yourself! Even if you think you cannot draw, you will find you can create beautiful pages. Melissa and Barbara will demonstrate and guide you through numerous techniques to help free your creative energies and spill them into your journal. Some entries will be messy and spontaneous and others more precise, with an emphasis on creative lettering.

You will work with pens and pencils, inks, watercolors, spray stains, and incorporate some collage, stencil and stamp techniques into your pages. Your journal experience is uniquely yours, based on your perspective and experiences, and can be filled with snips of the most ordinary things or the most unexpected.

Melissa Young’s career has been spent in family medicine. But she says:
“I’ve always used creative outlets to help keep me grounded.”

She has dabbled in ceramics, jewelry making, spinning & weaving, quilting, and acrylic and watercolor painting. Over the past few years, she enjoys sketchbook journaling for both everyday and traveling. She finds it a useful tool for spring-boarding other larger artworks from ideas developed on the pages of her journals.

Barbara Temple-Ayres has a degree in Art and German Literature, and a MAT in Art. Barbara says:
“Art knocked me over in college and I’ve been smitten ever since.”

Temple-Ayres began her career as a production potter. She helped found Fire Mt. School in Falcon Cove where she taught elementary kids over a span of 25 years. She started a summer art camp through the Cannon Beach Arts Association, which is in its 17th year. Temple-Ayres is a well-known artist, and host in the Hoffman Clay Studio and Gallery.

Hoffman Center Offers Bookbinding @ HOFFMAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Mar 30 @ 10:00 am – Mar 31 @ 3:00 pm

Hoffman Center Offers Bookbinding

The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita will offer Bookbinding, a two-day workshop March 30-31, from 10:00 am to 3:00pm each day.

This workshop will cover three different methods of bookbinding: a single signature hard bound book or journal with blank pages, an accordion style book made from a single large sheet of paper, and a “no glue” small book. Students will also practice painting techniques using marbling, chalk rubbing and paste to decorate papers for book covers.

Students will come away with three beautiful books of their own making ready to be filled with writing, sketching, doodles, collages, or gifts.

Bookbinding is an ancient craft practiced by cultures throughout the world. Palm leaf and bark were the early forerunners to paper. Bound by cords the hard covers were ornately decorated. Scrolls made from papyrus sheets were rolled to ease handling and storage. An estimated 700,000 scrolls were in Egyptian library in Alexandria when it was sacked and burned to the ground by Arabs in 640AD.  Early modern books were made from binding individual sheets of vellum.

Barbara Temple Ayres has a degree in Art and German Literature, and a MAT in Art. Ayres began her career as a production potter.  She helped found Fire Mt. School in Falcon Cove where she taught elementary kids over a span of 25 years. She started a summer art camp through the Cannon Beach Arts Association, which is in its 17th year. Ayres learned and practiced bookbinding and also entered the complex world of watercolor while teaching kids ten years ago. She is a well-known artist, and host in the Hoffman Clay Studio and Gallery.

Barbara says “art knocked me over in college and I’ve been smitten ever since.”

Dates: March 30-31, 2019

Time:  10:00am to 3:00pm

Tuition: $100

Materials Fee: $25 (paid to the instructor)

Hoffman Center Offers Rock Painting Workshop

The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita will offer Rock Painting: a two-hour workshop from 6:15 to 9:15pm Friday, May 10, 2019. Tuition is $30 per participant. This workshop will be taught by Oregon City artist Angela Thomas.

Bring your family, friends or neighbors for this three-hour evening workshop. This workshop is open to adults and children 8 years and older. Kids aged 8 to 13 must be accompanied by an adult. (Accompanying adults must register as well.)

Participants will explore different types of rock painting from Mandalas to pointillism to more realistic images. Paint pens and acrylic paint techniques will be available. Simple step-by-step methods that easily transform a rock to a piece of art will be demonstrated.

Artist and teacher Angela Thomas earned a master’s degree in Art Therapy from Marylhurst University and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Western Oregon University. She has worked with children, adolescents and adults in metal health agencies as well as academic settings since 1999.

Thomas’s commitment, as an artist and teacher, is to inspire students to discover their inner artist and to facilitate self-expression. She believes in giving people the artistic tools and language they need to understand and explore art at their own pace and in their own way. Thomas says:

“There is no right or wrong way to create art in my class.”

All materials, including rocks, are included in the $20 materials fee.
