Discover the wide range of GOLDEN paints
that are fluid in motion: High Flow, Fluid Colors, and QoR Watercolor. Learn how to make the best archival choices from a collection of products. Beginning with traditional watercolor techniques using QoR Watercolor, we move into more contemporary ideas including using GOLDEN products in journaling. This will include an assortment of applications such as: pouring, staining, granulation, blooms, splash, and “white-out” tricks for saving that uncooperative watercolor painting. We will then work with QoR Watercolors in combination with GOLDEN Acrylics to explore the resoluability of watercolor and the permanence of acrylics. Finally, attendees will learn how to take advantage of GOLDEN and QoR Grounds to create myriad surfaces for their work: from paper-like surfaces with the QoR Grounds, to utilizing unique substrates such as wood panels, fabrics, and plastics with GOLDEN Grounds. Finally, we will cover the options of Archival Varnishing of watercolor surfaces, for preservation without using glass. Attendees will receive a selection of the products discussed to take home and explore the breadth and depth of GOLDEN’s professional product line.

Beaded Painting

Mixed Media Beaded Butterfly Workshop: Painting with Reflection

Beaded Painting

This is a one-day workshop led by Portland artist, Beth Yazhari, the workshop will focus on creating one-of-a-kind painted backgrounds and on embellishing butterflies with hand-sewn beads. A simple technique employing acrylic paint and saran wrap will be used to create richly textured backdrops on canvases, which will be built up using layers of complementary colors and allowed to dry. Fabric butterflies will be collaged onto the canvases. Beads will be sewn on by hand with the canvases functioning as embroidery hoops.

Participants will be provided with a variety of beads, butterflies cut from different patterned fabrics, and a variety of vintage textiles to create their collages. While all materials are provided, Yazhari encourages participants to bring their own family heirloom textiles or jewelry to incorporate into their pieces. Yazhari says:

“It is a great opportunity to incorporate personally meaningful
artifacts into an original piece of art!”

Yazhari, who holds a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, and BA in English Literature from Northwestern University turns to a range of influences, from the abstract work of Mark Tobey and Miriam Schapiro to vintage beadwork and traditional textile techniques for inspiration. The themes of her work revolve around elevating the status of women, honoring and purposefully bringing together design motifs of diverse cultures, and creating harmony and beauty out of bits and pieces.

She is often drawn to the motif of butterflies, which not only lend themselves to ornamental and balanced compositions, but symbolize change, hope and the soul in many spiritual traditions. Examples of her intricate beaded paintings, many of which incorporate antique hand-embroidered fabrics from around the globe.

Artist Information

Ron Stocke
demonstration time: 11:00am – 1:00pm

Stocke Bandurka

Ron has a watercolor style that is recognizable around the world. His loose free approach creates mood and excitement in the paintings he creates. A more simple approach to how he builds his paintings come next. Connecting shapes, paying attention to values and isolating his focal point is his main focus. Viewers will enjoy watching how the painting develops. From a loose wet wash to a more controlled brushstroke, yet never loosing the energy. Viewers will leave wanting to paint!

Stocke Bandurka
Born in Chico California, Ron Stocke moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1979. Interested in drawing and painting at an early age, his career as an artist was shaped by life events that really encouraged him to explore ways to cope with everything in a positive, productive way. His first experience with painting came during school as a child when he was exposed to watercolors. Even at that young age, he found a love for that medium that would grow into a career that has lasted throughout his life.
Stocke BandurkaStocke Bandurka

An award-winning watercolor artist, Ron is a regular contributor to, and has been a cover artist for Watercolor Artist Magazine as well as other publications. Teaching comprehensive workshops throughout North America and Europe, he also conducts demonstrations and lectures on various art materials and creating a safe, environmentally friendly studio.

Stocke BandurkaStocke Bandurka

Ron holds Signature Membership with the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Northwest Watercolor Society, is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor, and a member of the American Impressionist Society. He has been an Artist Ambassador for M.Graham Watercolors for over 15 years. In December 2018 Ron’s first book ‘En plein air” was published by Walter Foster. It guides artists through some of his techniques and shows you how to avoid bad habits early on.

Angela Bandurka

demonstration time: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Stocke Bandurka
artist statement
Paintings are much more than simply a likeness, they are an opportunity to capture a moment. In my work, I try to capture a slice of everyday life, whether that’s a cup of hot tea in Grandma’s fine china, or a bystander appreciating the window displays downtown.
Whatever the subject matter, my first step is to achieve a good drawing. Value, light, and color are strong elements in all my work, with composition an important factor as well.
I try to paint the world as I see it, or as I would like to see it.
Stocke Bandurka

Angela has developed a unique approach to her painting style in opaque mediums. Starting with the dark values of her subject and exploding into the color and light, Angela grabs the viewers interest from the beginning and walks them through her process of how she creates one of her stunning images. With a few brush strokes Angela can capture the depth of the liquid in a teacup or the light reflecting from a store front window. Angela paints a wide range of subjects that will impress even the most prolific artist. Everyone will leave inspired!

Stocke Bandurka

Angela was born in British Columbia, Canada, and comes from a multi-generational family of passionate artists. Her Grandmother was one of her most influential mentors and helped shape Angela’s future as a painter. Drawing and painting since she was a small child, Angela completed her first commissioned portrait at 15. After many years as a Graphic Artist and Art Director for companies like Costco, RealNetworks, and Garrigan Lyman, Angela started painting and instructing full-time in 2008.
Stocke Bandurka
Her award-winning work has been exhibited in shows throughout North America. She is a Master Signature Member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters (ISAP), a member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society, Plein Air Washington Artists (PAWA), as well as the American Impressionists Society. Angela is currently represented by Cole Gallery in Edmonds, WA and the Lagerquist Gallery in Atlanta, GA.

I am Traditional Basket Weaver Stephanie Craig (Wood). I am enrolled member of The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon.  I’m Santiam and Yoncalla KalapuyaUmpqua, Takelma Rogue River, Clackamas Chinook and Iroquois. I grew up listening to my mother, my Chich (Grandmother in Chinuk Wawa) and aunties telling stories of our family’s weaving and our weaving traditions. Family baskets and weaving traditions have been passed down through six generations, and are still continued today through our teachings and basket making. I feel that it is very important to preserve our history; and as a young Native American tribal member, it is part of my job to help educate and document cultural heritage and traditions. I am committed to preserving our cultural practices for future generations and to continue on the traditions of our Elders.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in cultural anthropology with an emphasis on Northwest Native American cultures, and fulfilled my college language requirement with my  Native American language, Chinuk Wawa. I also hold an interdisciplinary  Masters of Arts degree comprised of coursework in cultural anthropology, museum studies and folklore studies. I have been chosen for internships at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American Indian Archives Department, the University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History, Tamástslikt Cultural Institute for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, as well as with traditional basket weavers.

Instructor Stephanie Craig

I’m very passionate about giving back to our community and want to sustain and help pass on our traditional culture and educate people on the history of civilization. As part of the next generation of Tradition Bearers, I want to support others who need it. As a young Indian woman, I feel it is important to share our stories and to pass on our culture to future generations; since we are the future.

You will learn how to recognize the basic shapes that make it easier to draw any subject; how to mix any color by using a few basic ones; how to achieve smooth gradations; and how to create optical texture by using David’s signature method of applying transparent washes over opaque layers.

Hoffman Center Offers Iris Folding Card Workshop @ The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita
Oct 12 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita will offer The Iris Fold, a paper workshop led by Patti Isaacs Saturday, October 12, from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Tuition is $70 plus a materials fee of $25.

Learn the beautiful art of iris folding, a paper crafting technique of folding strips of colored paper to form a design. The center of the design is reminiscent of the iris of an eye or a camera lens. Participants will take home 2 to 4 completed cards along with the knowledge and tips to create their own masterpieces.

Early artisans crafted designs using patterned papers, such as origami, wrapping, tissue, or scrapbook papers. Pages from magazines, maps, and books can be used. Many examples of iris fold patterns with fabric, lace and ribbon are readily found through a casual internet search.

Patti Isaacs has been creating Iris Fold cards and framed wall art for more than ten years. Her demonstrations at the Japanese Gardens ‘Paper Garden Show’ were highly anticipated and heavily attended.

Patti’s art training began at an early age. She received extensive training in high school and went on to study at Indiana University Bloomington. She has spent the past ten years developing her style and medium of expression. Patti is a silk painter and paper artist. Much of the paper Patti works with is Washi paper that she brought back from her travels in Japan.

Patti has exhibited in such venues as Beaver Tales touring show in a joint effort between artists and the Wetland Conservancy, The Big 500 at Pioneer Place mall, Washington County Open Studio Tour, Fire on the Water ‘The Dragon Boat Show at the Portland 5 Center, Four-Eights show at the Sherwood Center for the Arts, Celebration of Creativity art at the Southminster Presbyterian Church in Beaverton, and The Paper Garden Show at the Portland Gardens. Patti’s most recent exhibit is at the Guistina Gallery ‘Ode to Tides’ at the LaSells Stewart Center at Oregon State University (May 2-29, 2019). She has been a guest artist at Art on Broadway Gallery and a solo show at Art in the Loft in Seaside.

Patti co-juried the Sherwood Student Show 2016-2018. She is a member of SPIN—Silk Painter’s International and is on the Washington County Open Studio board.
