Hoffman Center Offers Origami Workshop

Origami

The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita will offer Origami, a one-day workshop Saturday, May 11, from10am to 3pm, with an hour break for lunch. This workshop will be taught by Oregon City artist Angela Thomas.

This workshop is open to adults and children 8 years and older. Bring your family, friends or neighbors for this four-hour workshop. Kids aged 8 to 13 must be accompanied by an adult. (Accompanying adults must register as well.)

Origami, the art of paper folding invented by the Japanese in the 8th century, is today practiced by people of all ages around the globe. Join artist and instructor Angela Thomas to explore and experiment with the art of folding paper. Thomas will guide and demonstrate folding techniques that will encourage participants to learn and master models. More challenging models will also be demonstrated.

Artist Angela Thomas earned a master’s degree in Art Therapy from Marylhurst University and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Western Oregon University. She has worked with children, adolescents and adults in metal health agencies as well as academic settings since 1999.

Thomas’s commitment, as an artist and a teacher, is to inspire students to discover their inner artist and to facilitate self-expression. She believes in giving people the artistic tools and language they need to understand and explore art at their own pace and in their own way. Thomas says:

“There is no right or wrong way to create art in my class.”

Origami paper and instructions for making models will be provided to students and are included in the materials fee.

PLEIN AIR WATERCOLOR CLASS @ The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita
May 13 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Hoffman Center Offers PLEIN AIR WATERCOLOR CLASS

Hoffman Center

The Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita will offer Watercolor in the Garden: Painting Plein Air led by Oregon artist Carolyn Gates. This two-day workshop is July 13-14 from 10:00am to 4:00pm each day. Tuition is $100.

If you love gardens and watercolor painting, this is the class for you! You will spend two days in the lovely Hoffman Center garden learning about composition, interpreting what you see, and the unique experience of painting outside. Some watercolor experience is preferred, as there will be no emphasis on explaining materials or beginning techniques.

Carolyn has been working in watercolor for the past fifteen years, and the qualities that characterize her work are strong color and compositions that explore the relationships of shapes to make pleasing visual patterns. This results in an abstraction of the subject. Her work investigates beauty, shape and color. In doing so, she hopes to discover the interplay between the ordinary and the extraordinary.

She currently teaches watercolor at Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene, Oregon, and teaches watercolor workshops at the Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita, Oregon.

Hoffman Center

She enjoys teaching and is inspired by the work her students do. Her focus is teaching basic concepts, while encouraging each student to find their own voice. “After every class and workshop, I want to go back to my studio and paint with the freedom and joy I see in my student’s work.”

Carolyn Studied studio art at Mira Costa College in Oceanside, California, and watercolor painting at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. She has studied watercolor with Carol Carter, Satoko Motouji, and Judy Morris. She is currently a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon.
