Kristy is a graduate of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, as well as a life license in teaching. She has taught colored pencil/watercolor pencil workshops nationwide, sometimes combining the two types of colored pencil for aqueous effects and intensely rich color. Having worked in colored pencil since 1986, she enjoys portraying flowers, fruit, and the Indiana Dunes and its Lake Michigan beaches. She is the author of Drawing and Painting with Colored Pencil, and is a contributor to The Best of Colored Pencil 1, 3, and 5; Creative Colored Pencil; Design: Illustration; The Best of Business Card Design 3 and 5; Creating Radiant Flowers in Colored Pencil; Floral Inspirations; Exploring Color (Revised Edition), and Colored Pencil Explorations. Her work has also appeared in “Master Painters of the World: United States Showcase” in International Artist Magazine and “Le crayon de couleur dans tous ses états” in Pratique des Arts. Kristy has a DVD called Colored Pencil Landscapes: Beyond the Basics through Artist Palette Productions. Her new techniques book, The New Colored Pencil, is a May, 2014 release from Watson-Guptill Publications.

Art LoftBorn in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, David’s appreciation of nature began in his youth, as he explored the Canadian outdoors.  Once he realized that the whole world was only a plane trip away, David embarked on longer reference gathering trips to places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Nepal, India, Brazil, Panama, and Costa Rica, as well as through most of the U.S.A. and Alaska.  In the meantime, David taught himself to draw and paint, experimenting with a variety of media and techniques.
Because of his love of wildlife, David had initially geared his education towards becoming a veterinarian, believing that art could only be treated as a hobby.  Still, while growing up, David received support and encouragement from his mother, who sometimes allowed him to stay up late on school nights so he could finish a drawing.  David still vividly remembers one of the last things his mother ever said to him: “Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you are not an artist.”  Unfortunately soon after, at the age of 17, David lost that source of support in a tragic manner, when David’s mother was killed by his father.  This terrible event impacted David’s life, and that of his four younger siblings, in immeasurable ways.  Introduced abruptly into the adult world, David had to find ways to support himself and secure his future, so he gave up his dream of attending university, and started work at a local factory.
Art LoftSoon, however, David’s sketches and paintings, which he continued to work on whenever he had a free moment, began to garner attention, opening a door to a world he had not known existed.  It was then that he decided to pursue a degree in art, hoping this would further demonstrate his professional commitment and enhance his credibility.  Fending for himself, David overcame incredible odds and eventually graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art.
David’s paintings have quickly gained recognition, and are part of corporate and private collections the world over.  David is a member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists and the Artists for Conservation Foundation (formerly Worldwide Nature Artists Group), and has been invited to exhibit in some of North America’s major art shows, where he has received a number of Best of Show and Excellence awards.
In 1993 David relocated his studio to Calgary, Alberta.  Besides painting, David spends time on research trips, and with the many students in his art classes and workshops, with whom he enjoys sharing his passions for nature and art.  Furthermore, he has had the opportunity to spend time in the field with some of the world’s top wildlife artists, including Robert Bateman and Carl Brenders.  A strong supporter of conservation projects and of his community, David continues to donate works in support of fund-raising activities by numerous organizations.

3 tenets of a good shape

“Every time I make a brushstroke, I want to make sure I’m creating a good shape,” says Lin. Here are three guiding principles she uses to inform her shapes. “A good shape:
+ has two different dimensions, meaning it’s taller or wider in one area than another or otherwise has variation in the sides.
+ is interesting, expressive and shares interlocking edges with other shapes.
+ contains gradations in terms of value, size, color temperature or texture.”

About the Artist

Mick’s award winning paintings strive to capture the mood and atmosphere of a subject, combining the magic of watercolor with reverence for the principles of design to create works of sophisticated simplicity.  He is a signature member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society (Crest Award), the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (Sylvan Grouse Guild) and the Baltimore Watercolor Society.  He is also an Artist Member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association.
Mick’s paintings are available for purchase at Visual Expansion Gallery in West Chester, PA, and Hardcastle Gallery in Centreville, DE. Mick teaches watercolor at the Wayne Art Center and Historic Yellow Springs and he is currently scheduling 1-5 day Exploring the Magic of Watercolor workshops.

Artist’s Statement
I am a passionate painter who believes that time spent painting is precious.  My goal is to draw and paint every day and I believe that the fastest way to artistic growth is through the activity of painting.  I  enjoy painting outside to take advantage of surroundings, natural light, and the sights and sounds that influence each painter’s creative nature.  Outside in nature’s studio is where I find the greatest challenge and the greatest reward.  I am challenged to capture the moment because light and its effect, reflection and cast shadow changes continuously.  I am forced to simplify, to reduce the overwhelming complexity of what’s in front of me into only the most important shapes and values. 
My nature is to be spontaneous so working loose and impressionistically appeals to me. The magic of watercolor is found in the partnership between artist and medium, of finding a balance between the knowledge, technique and skill of the painter while leaving room for the magic that makes watercolor so distinctive.

Sandi Kelley teaches Zentangle.

There’s a difference between Zentangle and mere doodling, says Sandi Kelley, and the difference is focus. She teaches Zentangle, a meditative process of drawing structured patterns ( Kelley, based in Warrenton, teaches classes by appointment and has pieces shown in various local galleries and at Coffee Addiction in Warrenton. What is it that you do?
“What I do is instruct and teach the art known as Zentangle. There’s been a lot of misconception when it comes to Zentangle. A lot of people, their knee-jerk reaction is how can they put a trademark on art. And that’s not what they’ve done. They’ve trademarked the name, the word Zentangle. But what Zentangle is, it’s not art, it’s actually a process of breaking down patterns and putting them into simple lines and simple strokes of the pen, to recreate them on paper.”
How did you get into this business?
“I was searching the big time-suck, Pinterest, and I came across some Zentangle work somebody had done, and I had never heard of it before. So immediately you go to the source, I went to, and found out more about it. Not only is it an art, it’s a very Zen-like, if you practice it every day. If you want to use it as a therapy, it works great, because it’s really easy to get lost in the focus of what you’re doing. I’ve been teaching now for two years, and it’s really hard to get into the school, because they only have five classes a year, and they’re usually booked within a week of notification. You have to go to the East Coast, to Providence, R.I., and you’re taught by the people who created Zentangle.”
Who are your main clientele?
“People who just are intrigued by the fact that we say there are no mistakes and anybody can do it. I was skeptical when I saw the stuff that was posted online. I doodled when I was in high school, but it never looked like this. This looks like doodling to me, and it looks like doodling to a lot of people. It’s been older, younger. I’ve had several men in my classes, but mostly women.”
What are some of the quirks or challenges of running your business?
“Mostly getting people to understand what it is and what it isn’t. I had a booth at the Sunday Market, and some people get really pugilistic about it being a trademark. And there was one lady who wouldn’t let me take a breath, she was so adamant that it was a terrible thing to do. My guess is that most people who think it’s not really an art to do this are people who could create this without a class, whose doodles actually look like something. But for those of us who had no talent and had doodles that were just pen marks, once I figured I could do it, anybody could do it, because I had no background, no talent, nothing when I started.”

As part of her lifelong passion for art, Jo Pomeroy-Crockett, Ph.D., paints in watercolor, water media including acrylics and inks, pastel and collage including assemblage. In addition to her work as a free-lance writer and educator, her painting allows her to continue developing her creativity and technical skills.

Pomeroy-Crockett works primarily wet-into-wet and strives for dramatic value patterns. Bright colors, an emphasis on the play of light, and a touch of whimsy mark her paintings. Although she enjoys painting a wide variety subjects, she especially enjoys painting animals.
Pomeroy-Crockett was a juried member of the Arizona Artists Guild and is currently a juried member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon. She has exhibited in numerous juried art competitions. Her work is in private collections in various parts of the U.S., England, Canada, and Switzerland.
Currently, Pomeroy-Crockett is part owner of the Astoria Art Loft where she gives painting classes.

My first recollection of doing any type of art was the first summer I spent with my Grandmother after third grade. It was amazing how many ‘Story Book’ doll clothes I could design and produce in a three week period. As I recall from about the 6th or 7th grade until I graduated from high school I designed and made most of my own clothing.
As the years passed my love of color and creating never waned – – just the amount of time I had. Doodling on office note pads was the closest I got to doing any kind of art. Even that was just that – doodling. A full time career, family and exchange students seemed to fill every minute. I did manage a few times to take Decorative Art classes and ceramic workshops.
After I retired I began taking art classes at Clatsop Community College, drawing and oil classes. I have taken various workshops in Washington, Oregon, The Azores, The Trail’s End Summer Workshop series in Gearhart, Oregon and other local classes and private lessons.
My first painting attempt was in oil. I love the richness and creamy texture of the oils when working with them. I have painted with acrylics and have done college. As my husband and I began to travel I decided to try using colored pencil and watercolor. I have acquired a great fondness for Mixed Media. My first love though is still working with oils.
Why do I paint? For me painting is the process not the end product. Art is my meditation – the calming point in my life. A pencil or brush in hand takes me to those far away places in my inner soul where only I can go.
I have had an affiliation with Trail’s End Art Association and Gallery in Gearhart, OR, Palette Puddlers of Cannon Beach, along with other groups. I have been juried into the Clatsop Community College Student show. As a member/business partner in the Astoria Art Loft, LLC, my love of art has come full circle from viewer to artist.
