ABOUT DON COLLEY

Don’s unique style begins from his drawing journals; vintage journals from the 1900s.  A casual flip through his art journal brings his unique style to light; a combination of bold and intricate lines- enough to beckon viewers for a closer look.  Barely legible under his drawings are old journal entries from bookkeepers a century ago.
The demos will focus on Don’s drawing style and why Faber-Castell’s PITT® artist pens have allowed him to do that.  He carries with him a number of finished and in-process pieces that illustrate the difference in using premium quality Faber-Castell products. His main staples include PITT® Artist Pens, Polychromos Color Pencils, Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils, charcoals and graphites.
Faber-Castell’s high quality art materials are known for their vibrant colors, and durability.  All the mediums are waterproof when dry, lightfast, and archival.
Don encourages attendees to bring their sketchbooks and drawing materials, as the best demos are often the ones that become more hands on for the attendees.  At each city, he will be visiting local retail art supply partners and schools.  There, he will be leading workshops and passing out samples of Faber-Castell drawing materials. He has even been known to take the group outside to do some urban sketching!
Don’s life and memories are shown through his sketches- each detailed piece reflecting more than a camera lens can reveal.  He loves to document the world around him and observe people and places he goes.

Donald Owen Colley was born in Phoenix, AZ in 1954 and was an Air Force brat until age 16.  He has lived in Texas, New Jersey, California, Washington State, Washington DC, Alaska and even Turkey.  He now resides in Chicago with family in Texas and California.  With Don moving so much in his childhood it gave him the opportunity to learn to observe and appreciate other cultures.
School and Professional Background
Don graduated from the University of Texas in 1981 with his Bachelors in Fine Arts, but he started as a Bio-Chem major.  He wasn’t fully committed to Science and knew he had a passion for Art, so he changed his major and has made his living being a Professional Artist.  Don has taught Basic Drawing for Design students at Drexel University in 1998 but feels his biggest accomplishment is that he has made a living being a professional artist.  Working with Faber-Castell on the Road Trip has given him the opportunity to be a wanderer and document the world around him with his artwork.  His art has been used in commercial applications but also for fine art and his artwork is displayed at multiple art galleries in Chicago including the Carl Hammer Gallery as well as on his website buttnekkiddoodles.com.
Inspiration
Don is active with the Urban Sketchers movement and loves to help others learn about art and work on their talents.  He practices drawing daily and stays active with his craft to grow his own skills and continue learning.  Don looks for personality in others’ works and is inspired by a wide range of artists including da Vinci, Michelangelo, Degas and Van Gogh, as well as Tom Lovell, Kathe Kollwitz, Max Fleisher, Horace Pippin, Jim Nutt and Hiro Shige.
